Google Gemini Now Lets You Generate and Edit Files Directly in Chat

Google has updated Gemini to allow all users to generate, preview, and edit files directly inside their chat conversations. The change means you can work on documents, spreadsheets, and code without needing to switch tabs or download files to your computer.

According to The Verge, the new capabilities support a wide range of file formats, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, PDFs, Markdown files, plain text files, and code files.

Earlier this year, Google introduced the ability to generate and download files inside Gemini chats. However, adjusting or updating those generated files previously required jumping into Google Workspace or opening external programs. With this update, editing happens right within the chat screen.

How in-chat file editing works

The updated interface allows you to view files side-by-side or expand them into a full-screen mode to make changes manually or with the help of AI.

According to The Verge, you can highlight specific parts of a document inside the chat to give Gemini targeted instructions. For instance, you can select a table of numbers and ask Gemini to transform it into a graph, or highlight a paragraph to request edits or ask questions about that specific section.

This setup mirrors features seen in other popular AI chat tools. Anthropic introduced document and presentation editing directly within Claude chats earlier this year. Google itself already offers Gemini integrations within Workspace applications like Google Docs via a side panel, but bringing full file creation and editing into standalone Gemini chats gives users a single space to draft and polish content.

Device support and pricing

The new file editing tools are available starting today for all Gemini users. Anyone with a basic Google account can access the feature for free on Gemini’s free plan.

There are a few platform differences to keep in mind depending on what device you use:

  • PDF files: Previewing and editing PDFs works on both the web browser version and mobile apps.
  • Docs, Sheets, and other formats: Editing Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, plain text, and code files is currently restricted to the web version of Gemini.

While Gemini is free to use with a Google account, higher usage limits and advanced features like video generation require paid Google AI subscriptions, according to our tool data. Why this matters for everyday users

For everyday users, the main benefit of in-chat file editing is speed and simplicity. Writing a report, structuring a budget spreadsheet, or cleaning up code usually involves copying text back and forth between a chatbot and separate desktop software.

By letting you inspect, tweak, and format documents right alongside your conversation, Gemini reduces tab clutter and speeds up common tasks. Whether you are drafting an essay, building a budget, or preparing a presentation outline, you can complete the work in one browser tab before exporting the finished file.
