Claude and Gemini: free general-purpose writers
For most people, a general AI assistant is the best free writing tool. Claude has a free plan for everyone, and Anthropic’s pricing page says it needs no card; usage limits apply and reset over time. Pro costs $20 a month. Gemini is free with a Google account and works inside Google apps such as Docs and Gmail; paid Google AI plans raise the usage limits.

Grammarly: best for polishing what you wrote
Grammarly checks your writing as you type in the browser and other apps. Its free plan includes 100 AI prompts a month for rewriting and drafting. That suits occasional use; if you rely on AI rewrites daily, the Plus plan raises the limit to 2,000 prompts a month.
Jasper: for marketing teams, not free
Jasper is built for businesses that produce lots of marketing content in a consistent brand voice. It offers a 7-day free trial of its Pro plan, after which Pro costs $69 a month, or $59 a month on a yearly plan with a 12-month commitment.
