Free AI tools for students and researchers

AI ToolsOctober 26, 20262 min read

Students are the people most likely to need AI tools and least likely to want to pay for them. The good news: several useful tools are free, and some offer students paid plans at no cost. We checked these on October 25, 2026.

Elicit: research papers, unusually free

Elicit is an AI research assistant for academic papers. Its free plan includes unlimited search across more than 138 million papers, unlimited summaries and unlimited chat with papers. Only the deeper Research Agent and Research Reports are limited. For literature reviews and essays that need real sources, it is one of the most generous free AI tools we have checked.

Notion: Plus plan free for students

Notion is popular for class notes, reading lists and project planning. According to its pricing page, the Plus plan for one member is free for students and educators, with more version history and larger file uploads than the free plan. Note that Notion AI itself is only a limited trial on free plans.

Beautiful.ai: a free year with a .edu email

Beautiful.ai designs slides automatically as you add content. Most people get a 14-day trial, but students with a valid .edu email can get a year free. Useful if your university gives you a .edu address.

Claude and Gemini: free study partners

Both Claude and Gemini have free plans that can explain topics, quiz you and give feedback on drafts. Use them as tutors, not ghostwriters; our guide on using AI to study without cheating shows how.

Three rules for students using AI

  1. Check your school’s AI policy before using AI for assignments.
  2. Never cite a source you have not opened. AI can invent references; Elicit links to real papers, but always read them.
  3. Do not pay before trying the free options. Many “student AI” apps charge for features these free tools already offer.
