Google’s Gemini assistant in the car is about to get much more personal. Starting October 20, Google began rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto, letting the assistant pull details from your Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, Search history and YouTube to answer questions on the road, TechCrunch and 9to5Google report.
What Personal Intelligence does in the car
Personal Intelligence is a feature Google already offers in the Gemini app on phones. It lets Gemini connect information across your Google accounts so you don’t have to spell everything out. Now that ability is coming to Android Auto, the app that puts your phone’s maps, music and messages on your car’s dashboard screen.
The examples Google gave are practical:
- Ask for your flight’s gate and whether it’s still on time, and get both answers at once, using the booking in your email or calendar.
- Say “Take me to my doctor’s appointment” without looking up the address.
- Ask for a restaurant with indoor seating that fits your usual tastes, without listing your dietary needs every time.
- Ask Gemini to find a car wash you took a photo of last week, then navigate there.
- Head to a coffee shop you talked about the day before.
TechCrunch also describes the assistant warning a driver heading to the airport that the flight on their calendar is delayed.
When and where
The rollout to Android Auto began on October 20. Cars with Google built in (where Google’s software runs directly in the car, sometimes called Android Automotive) will get it “in the coming months,” according to both outlets.
Gemini first arrived in Android Auto in November 2025, TechCrunch notes. Personal Intelligence itself launched across the U.S. in March 2026 and is still in beta in other countries. Neither article lists exactly which countries get the car version first.
Privacy and control
This feature is opt-in, meaning it is off unless you switch it on. Google says users “do retain full control over their data,” and you can choose which apps Gemini is allowed to connect to and turn the whole thing off at any time. TechCrunch points out that this level of access to your email and photos may make some people uneasy.
There is one shortcut to be aware of: 9to5Google reports that if you have already turned on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone, it will carry over to Android Auto automatically. If you haven’t, Gemini in the car still handles navigation, music, calls and general questions, just without the personalized answers.
In cars with Google built in, personal answers are only shared when your phone is connected in the car.
What it means for you
If you use Android Auto and Gemini, this could save you fiddling with your phone at red lights to find addresses or flight details. Neither TechCrunch nor 9to5Google says whether it requires a paid Google AI plan, so check the Gemini app’s settings when the update reaches you. To control it, look for Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone: switch it on to try it, choose which Google apps it can read, or leave it off if you would rather keep your inbox out of your car.
